New concept of health science – Nutritional Immunology
The human body is constantly at war. Over 90% diseases are related with the dysfunction of immune system, such as cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, autoimmune disease, like lupus etc, allergy etc.. Everyday the immune system defends against innumerable threats to our health. But the ability to ultimate win the war against illness and disease is in our control. We have the best defense known to man – the human immune system.
What Is Immune System?
The immune system encompasses almost every system of body. Tonsils, lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, thymus, appendix and intestinal wall are the organs that control and produce our immune response. The immune system is a complex network that regulates our physical and mental wellbeing.
Step One: Defend
When an invader attempts to enter the body, it must first cross multiple barriers such as our mucus membranes and skin. If the invader enters the body, white blood cells quickly recognize the pathogen as an invader and begin to coordinate the defense system. Soon other defender cells, such as killer cells, macrophages and phagocytes come to help destroy the invader. White blood cells begin to produce an antibody to defend against any further attack. The body produces more than one billion different antibodies to combat many types of invaders.
Step Two: Attack
Natural killer cells destroy cells that have been taken over by enemy antigens. They are the body’s strongest defense against cancers and tumors. When cancer takes over healthy cells, for example, it is natural killer cells’ responsibility to attack them and destroy the occupied cells. The natural killer cells are highly toxic to enemy antigens. Even slightly contact causes an antigen to begin breaking apart.
Step Three: Cleanse
Macrophages, the “garbage men” of the body, ingest any foreign particles, including dead virus and bacteria, dead cancer cells, dead blood cells and dead body cells. So you see the garbage men are essential for keeping our bodies clear of all kinds of stuff.
Step Four: repair
Damaged areas are repaired and the normal, healthy condition of the body is restored. Mast cells release histamine and heparin which stimulate other cells to open the blood vessels, thereby increasing circulation and allowing the process of cell and tissue regeneration.
Nutritional Immunology is the study of how nutrition support and enhance the immune system and its related functions. It focuses on the delicate balance between nutrition and our ability to maintain optimal health. When we eat properly, get sufficient rest, and exercise regularly, our immune system can function at peak efficiency. However, when we deprive our body of proper nutrients, our immune system is weakened, making us susceptible to poor health.
The Power of Plants
Nutrition is the key to better health. The U.S. Department of Health has stated that the poor diet is second only to tobacco as the leading cause of death in the U.S.
Without nutritious whole foods, the four-step defense process can not function properly. Besides the traditional nutritional concepts: fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamin, minerals, the scientific researches found there are 3 groups of nutrients are crucial to strength our immune system. There are called phytochemicals, antioxidants and polysaccharides. While our bodies require from a wide variety of food groups, studies have shown that plant foods – fruits, vegetables and herbs – nourish the body in ways that other foods cannot. The healing power of plant foods comes from these vital nutrients, phytochemicals, antioxidants and polysaccharides. These nutrients offer enormous promise in the fight to maintain optimal health.
